Quote of the Day

We have all known loneliness, and we have learned that the only solution is love, and that love comes with community.
- Dorothy Day

“You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred.

You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing what they could and should do for themselves.”
                             - Abraham Lincoln, in his “Recession Speech”

January 23, 2012:

Well, we finally know.

The New England Patriots and the New York Giants are heading for the Super Bowl.

At least the angst is over, and we can all settle down until Feb. 5 when the winning teams arrive at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

How ironic that Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning will be playing the biggest game of this season in the home stadium of his storied older brother quarterback, Peyton.

But, by all accounts that I have read, Peyton is so supportive of his brother. You can fill the love between these two. After all, they’re a football family. Peyton reportedly showed up at the play-off game Sunday without telling Eli he was there until it was over.

Then he rushed to the locker room to give his younger brother by four years a huge hug and tell him how proud he was.

Sunday’s game between the Patriots and 49ers was a nail-bitter. My friend, a diehard 49ers fan, was up and down like a roller coaster watching the game. But, after the rollercoaster ride of two excellent teams, it was the Giants who score the victory with Lawrence Tynes’ field goal in overtime.

With the new rules for overtime in NFL playoff games, there was still several minutes left for San Francisco to fire back, but it wasn’t to be.

The first game was just as hard to watch. Always one who, if not openly, secretly roots for the underdog, I was placing my bet on the Baltimore Ravens. It would have been an incredible upset over the New England Patriots, but it wasn’t to be.

Even though Ravens’ quarterback Joe Plaxxo played a terrific game, it was the crowd-stunning miss of a 32-yard field goal attempt by Billy Cundit that cost the Ravens the trip to the Super Bowl.

Boy, I would want to be Billy today, even though his teammates have all come out with supportive statements for him. The fans were not as forgiving.

So here we go again. New England’s silky smooth Tom Brady will match up with New York Giants Ely Manning for the coveted Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5 at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, known more for the other Manning’s winning throws than his younger brother.

If the Giants win, that would give Eli two Super Bowl wins to his older brother Peyton’s one for his lone championship against the Saints in 2007.

But you can bet Peyton Manning and the rest of the football-loving Manning family will be there rooting for the Big Blue and their youngest son and brother, Ely, to get his name in the books again.

My dream was to see the Harbough brother coaches (San Francisco and Baltimore) match up in the big game, but it wasn’t to be. So I may do a turncoat and join you transplanted New Yorkers in rooting for Eli. After all, my daughter is now a resident of the Big Apple, and another big Giant fan so it’s going to be easy for me to go with the rowdy group of New York fans.

Meanwhile, the play-off games overshadowed the Miami Heat’s first loss since playing without Dwayne Wade Sunday night to Minnesota. We’re wishing, hoping and praying for the big guy to get that left foot running again.

Until next time………………………………………………..Betty
